Top 10 Essential Oils to start with

I remember when I was first introduced to essential oils at a natural solutions class. There was so many different oils and so many different uses for them it was slightly overwhelming. I remember thinking am I actually going to need most of the oils out there, and if i did, did i really have the time to invest in researching how to use them. Sometimes when things were overwhelming I would find myself to pulling back or putting it away for 'another day'. It was almost counter intuitive, if I took me time to learn - I could sometimes see it as a waste of time. But instead, that day, I was so taken aback by the possibilities of essential oils I choose to invest in the 10 oils I am going to share with you today, and just as importantly invest my time to learn how to use them confidently and effectively.

Since then essential oils have opened up an entirely new world for mine and my families health and well-being. We have been able to handle basic first aid, allergy symptoms, naturally boost our immune system, support our emotional needs and boost our moods, raise energy levels and reduce our toxic load.

So, today i am going to share with you the 10 basic oils that every family can benefit from that I will always recommend people to start with.

Nine times out of ten when you look up an ailment in the A-Z guide or book, it will recommend at least one of the oils in the list below:


Cleansing, revitalising and uplifting

  • Add 3-5 drops to a diffuser to purify air and create an uplifting, refreshing, aromatic experience.

  • Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water to clean table, countertops and other surfaces. (P.S It's great for removing gum, glue and other sticky residues)

  • Add 1 or 2 drops to a litre of water and drink to support healthy digestion.*

  • Add to desserts or cooking oils to add a zesty flavour to your food.


Soothing and Calming

  • Add a few drops into a diffuser or onto your pillow to prepare for a restful night sleep. You can also rub into the soles of your feet with a carrier oil to promote calm.

  • Apply topically to help reduce blemishes, itchy or irritated skin. (On a personal note: This really worked wonders for me after suffering an allergic reaction to my skin. I can honestly say as soon as I applied the lavender the itch and sting was almost instantaneously relieved. and I just simply reapplied it again when necessary.)

  • Add a few drops to your bath to help soak the stress away.


Cooling, energising and natural bug repellent.

  • Apply topically to the back of the neck to cool off.

  • Rub on the head and neck for a soothing sensation when tense.

  • Add to shampoo or conditioner for a stimulating scalp massage.

Melaleuca (tea-tree)

Soothing and purifying

  • For occasional skin irritations, apply 1–2 drops of Melaleuca essential oil onto affected area.

  • Add 1–2 drops to water, citrus drinks, or veggie caps to support healthy immune system function.*

  • Combine 1–2 drops with your facial cleanser for added cleansing properties, or apply to skin after shaving.

  • Apply to fingernails and toenails after showering to purify and keeps nails looking healthy.

  • Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water and use on surfaces to protect against environmental threats.


Renewing, Grounding, beautifying and rejuvenation;

Commonly known as the King of Oils

  • Rub Frankincense on your hands after a long day of work for a warming and soothing effect.

  • Apply topically to help reduce the appearance of skin imperfections.

  • Can be applied to the bottoms of feet to promote feelings of relaxation and to balance mood.

  • Take one to two drops in a veggie capsule to support healthy cellular function.*


Cleansing and offers powerful antioxidants*

  • Take one drop in a veggie cap or 4 fl. oz of liquid daily to maintain healthy immune function.*

  • Add one to two drops to a veggie capsule to support healthy respiratory function.*

  • Put one drop in place of dried oregano in spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, or on a roast.

  • Add 10 drops to a 16-ounce spray bottle with water for a surface cleaner.

On Guard

Protective Blend

  • Add two to three drops in a veggie capsule for an immune boost.*

  • Add to water for an effective all-purpose surface cleaner.

  • Soak sliced apples in water and a few drops for a healthy, immune-boosting snack.*

  • Combine a few drops of doTERRA On Guard with Fractionated Coconut Oil for a natural hand cleanser.

Deep Blue

Soothing Blend

  • Apply on feet and knees before and after exercise.

  • Massage Deep Blue with a few drops of carrier oil onto growing kids’ legs before bedtime.

Digestive Blend

  • Add a few drops to water to take internally. to aid with digestion or soothe IBS symptoms*

  • Rub on the stomach before flying or taking a road trip for a calming aroma.

  • Take Zengest internally when traveling or trying new foods to soothe occasional stomach upset.*

  • Add to water or tea to maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract.*


Respiratory Blend

  • Diffuse, inhale directly from palms, or rub on chest or feet when seasonal and environmental threats are high.

  • Use when outdoors to minimize the effects of colds and flu.

  • Diffuse at bedtime for a restful environment.
