The Beginners Guide to Essential Oils

Hello,


Today I want you to Sit back, relax, and prepare to dive into the world of essential oils. The intention I have is that by the end of this post, I want you to feel empowered and excited about using essential oils in your home for your physical and emotional wellbeing; and not just for you, but for your friends and for your family around you.

With some simple information and safety advice, you’ll be able to reach for your bottles of essential oils, use them, experience them, fall in love with them, and benefit your well-being to a level you could never have imagined; this was certainly my experience.


You Have Choices


Essential oils have gained a lot of attention as of late because they are providing a solution to a gap in healthcare. What do you do when you are not sick enough to go to the hospital, but you do want symptom relief? What do you do when you want to prevent illness before it starts? What do you turn to when you need emotional support?

Essential oils are providing great solutions for this and can truly empower you to build your own natural solution toolkit.


I began my journey with essential oils a couple of years ago looking for a natural way to support my emotional health. My mum took me along to an essential oils workshop that was a game-changer for me. I was welcomed into a room with open arms and like-minded people and it was there that i was introduced to the world of doTERRA essential oils.

I sat there and absorbed all the information the lady was sharing with me. I was intrigued by the possibilities, inspired by her passion and quite honestly at avery low point, desperately scrabbling around to find some kind of support, so i thought what the heck and signed myself up to doTERRA with an essential oil kit. I walked away from that class not knowing exactly how life changing the little package coming in the post was going to be for me.


Over time I worked with my oils and created an ' I've got your back pack ' that went absolutely everywhere with me. I felt so empowered to have something i could reach for in my times of need and even though i was using them intentionally for emotional support i was soon also noticing the health benefits along the way. I was so fascinated with what these little bottles of oils could do for me and those around me, I kept researching all the information i could get my hands on.


So, What exactly are Essential Oils?

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots and the flowers of plants, give plants their distinctive smells, offer protection from threats and play a role in pollination.


The oils that are created within the plant is the plant’s natural immune system: it’s what they produce to protect themselves in the wild, in the absence of sharp teeth or a hunter’s instinct! 

We, like plants are carbon-based, so if a plant has properties that protects it against environmental/seasonal threats, and/or contains naturally occurring antioxidants, then these too can be transferred to our body’s immune system so it can be strengthened to support us in the same way.


Examples of how you can use essential oils to support your health and well-being

Physical support:


Peppermint: to help reduce bloating or gas, and to aid with clear breathing Lavender: to help ease the discomfort of itchy skin Deep Blue: to help reduce the tension around your forehead Clary Sage: to help provide comfort from pre-menstrual symptoms Zengest: to aid digestion and maintain overall digestive health Melaleuca: to cleanse the skin, and promote a healthy immune function On Guard: to protect against environmental threats and help support a healthy respiratory function


Emotional Support:


Citrus oils: are great oils to reach for in times of emotional distress as they send the same messages to your brain as anti-depressants, so are really great at uplifting mood and offering emotional support.

Console: doTERRA's Comforting Blend, uses sweet floral and tree essential oils to promote feelings of comfort, putting you on a hopeful path of emotional healing.

Serenity: The doTERRA Restful Blend, calms the senses and supports a restful nights sleep. 


The 3 methods you can use essential oils: Aromatically, topically or internally.



1. Aromatically:


This is the fastest way to get them into your body. Essential oils are very powerful for our mood.

When we inhale an essential oil it goes up our nose into the area of the brain that is responsible for our mood and our emotions.


Some of us might have had experience of using inhaled medications or anaesthetics, and so you'll know just how fast and effective this method can be. Inhaling essential oils works the same way – fast and effective.

You can just put a drop of oil in your hands and inhale or put 3-5 drops into a diffuser.


Aromatic Tip #1: Using Wild Orange to help alleviate anxiety

  • First put a few drops of Wild Orange into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Place your hands in a cup position over your nose and take a deep breath in for the count of 7 and breath out for 11. continue this for as long as necessary.

Many oils are effective at helping with anxiety. If we think about anxiety medications given to us by doctors, they are mostly in pill form. They first enter our stomach where they are broken down. When we breathe in an essential oil, the effect can be immediate.


Another reason to use essential oils is for your physical well-being by using essential oils aromatically not only to clear the air of smell, but you can also use them to clear the air of bacteria.


Aromatic Tip #2: A few drops of On Guard in a diffuser can be used to clear the air of b bacteria and airborne viruses.

  • This particular oil is being used in over 120 hospitals in America and has been shown in studies to kill MRSA (the hospital bug).


Aromatic Tip #3: Use essential oils to help with colds and coughs, asthma, and even snoring.

  • Place 3-5 drops of oils such as peppermint or Air into a diffuser overnight when experiencing poor sleep due to illness. You can also apply them topically onto the chest and back, diluted in carrier oil, like you would with Vicks as an added natural support. Air, is an incredible oil which opens the airways and creates feelings of clear breathing.


2. Topically:


We can apply an oil topically to target an area. If you have sore muscles, aches or pains or skin conditions, you can actually put the oils directly onto the area to target the ailment.



Topical Tip #1: Apply essential oils to the bottoms of you feet

  • The feet are a very good place to put the oils. This way they get into the body systemically and because the skin is very hard here they are less likely to cause sensitivity. The oils enter your bloodstream within a matter of minutes and then go on to penetrate your cells for support for upto 3 hours. The feet are also a good place to use the oils on children or if you have very sensitive skin.


Topical Tip #2: Use a carrier oil to apply your oils topically

  • Using a carrier oil to apply tour oils actually drives (literally ‘carries’) the oils into your bloodstream. Essential oils are highly volatile substances, which evaporate easily and if not applied with a carrier oil, so you get less effective use.

  • Always dilute oils with a carrier oil when using on children. Topical use is a wonderful way to use the oils, but also due to the power of touch for human happiness, something we often miss in modern society. You will find these oils are wonderful way to connect with your loved ones, both emotionally but also physically.

Carrier oils? For those of you, like me when i first started, when somebody mentions a carrier oil is thinking a what now?

Carrier oils can come in all forms such as fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, vegetable oil - I hope you get my drift! :)


Topical Tip #3: Use essential oils for pain relief

Simply apply oils to the are you are wishing to target

  • Deep Blue is the soothing blend, it’s anti-inflammatory, so you can use that for muscle aches, for migraines.

  • Frankincense, good for arthritis, period pain, ligament pain, post-exercise recovery.


3. Internally:


The third way you can take the essential oils is internally. If you are on any form of medication I would always ask you to consult your doctor before doing this, as the oils can interact with some medications – not all but some.

Today I am only recommending dōTERRA essential oils specifically for internal usage as i have personal experience of them. dōTERRA tests their oils like no other company, they invest an incredible amount of money into this and work very closely with the farmers to ensure the purity of the oils. Not all companies have this ability, so they can’t give the same guarantee and i would never recommend taking oils internally without thorough research beforehand.



There are a few ways you can take ingestible oils safely and internally: You can simply just take a drop and put it into your mouth (I wouldn’t recommend that with all oils as some of them are very strong and not all of them taste that great either, trust me!). You can add a drop or two to your water, some honey or even your cooking oil or finally you can put a couple of drops into a vegetable capsule and take with water, like you would a vitamin.


Internal Tip #1: Always keep in mind that it isn’t safe to take all essential oils internally

  • Not all essential oils are safe for internal usage. Only oils that have been labeled for internal use by doTERRA CPTG essential oils should be used internally. 

  • doTERRa's Blend Deep Blue has a child proof cap as it is also not safe to internalise. It contains Wintergreen oil, which one drop of is the equivalent of taking about 70 aspirins. This shows how powerful the oils are, which is great, but in this instance that would be dangerous.


Internal Tip #2: Ease and support your digestion with essential oils

  • ZenGest can be used for all digestive issues from heartburn and acid reflux to indigestion, bloating, food allergies and even IBS. It also helps with diarrhoea, constipation, food poisoning and even motion sickness. You also can use this oil topically onto the stomach or internally by placing one to two drops in some water and drinking it.


Internal Tip #3: Discover the power of Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint for allergies.

  • Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint, The Antihistamine Blend: This can be used for hayfever and other allergic reactions such as allergies to pets or insect bites etc.

- For mild reactions, just put one drop of each into your hands and breathe it in.

- For more severe reactions, put one drop each into a glass of water and drink it or add to a vegetable capsule and take with water.

- You can also put them in the diffuser for support throughout the day and overnight.


Choosing Quality Essential Oils


Because of increasing success stories, essential oils are widely available, well, everywhere and if you start to look into it, you will find tons of brands and options available. 

I wanted to touch briefly on what you might find when looking for essential oils


Essential oils come in different grades:

1. Synthetic – these have chemicals inside. They’re the oils most readily found in shops but you definitely can’t take these internally. They will actually do damage if you do .


2. Food Grade – can be used in food (herbal teas, raw chocolate, many drinks)


3. Therapeutic Grade – very high quality oil that great care is taken over


4. CPTG - the highest grade of essential oil, which is what dōTERRA* essential oils are.


* dōTERRA wanted to create oils that were pure, safe . This was the reason they started the company so they do a lot of testing on their oils to guarantee this. You can learn so much more about this here.

In a nutshell if you choose to invest in quality oils and use them aromatically, topically or internally to support your physical and emotional health and well-being you will empower yourself to take your health and well-being to another level.
